Tug boats play a critical role in maritime operations, providing essential services such as towing, manoeuvring and assistance to larger vessels. These vessels must be in optimal condition, otherwise the safety and efficiency of port activities may be at risk.

At Silverstar Marine (SSM), we recognise that tug boats cannot be approached in the same way as larger vessels. As such, we have developed specialised maintenance services designed to keep your fleet operational, compliant and ready to perform under demanding conditions.

How We Approach Tug Boats

Tug boats are unique vessels and require a specialised approach to maintenance. Standard repair practices are often insufficient due to the vessels’ compact size, powerful propulsion systems and heavy-duty operational demands.

Understanding these complexities, we have tailored our approach to meet the needs of tugs:

  • Heavy-Duty Wear and Tear: Tug boats are required for intense operations that will eventually cause structural fatigue. To prepare the vessel for constant manoeuvring, heavy loads and frequent impacts, our maintenance process places a strong focus on the structural integrity of hulls, frames and fenders.

  • Propulsion Systems Under Pressure: Tug boats rely on powerful propulsion systems to deliver high thrust in confined spaces, placing strain on propellers, drive lines and engines. We focus on propulsion systems to minimise wear, ensure alignment and enhance performance against the rigours of daily operations.

  • Deck Equipment Focus: Tug boats hold deck equipment, such as winches, hooks, and towing gear, which are essential for their towing capabilities. We carry out thorough functionality checks for all deck equipment, ensuring that each component meets the highest standards of safety and performance.

  • Compact Spaces Require Precision: The confined nature of these vessels requires a precise and careful approach to repairs, particularly when dealing with mechanical and electrical systems. Our technicians are experienced in working accurately and efficiently in these tight spaces.

  • Operational Readiness and Compliance: Tug boats must be ready for immediate deployment and be able to respond to time-sensitive operations. We always aim for fast turnaround times, whilst never compromising a vessel’s operational efficiency, safety or regulatory compliance.

At SSM, we tailor our services to the operational realities of each vessel. We understand the specific challenges of tug boat maintenance and adapt our workflow to suit, leaving your vessel ready for a demanding workload.

Our Facilities

To facilitate comprehensive maintenance, SSM utilises the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) Common User Facility (CUF) for dry docking services. The floating dock at CUF enables us to accommodate a diverse range of tug boats in a controlled environment.

Recently, SSM has enhanced our dry docking encapsulation from 35 meters to 55 meters, allowing us to service two vessels simultaneously. A double-docking capability offers significant benefits, including:

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Sharing resources between two vessels reduces overall expenses.

  • Time Efficiency: Concurrent repairs minimise downtime, ensuring vessels return to operation promptly.

  • Flexibility: Increased scheduling options to better align with clients’ operational timelines.

  • Rapid Response: Enhanced capacity to address urgent maintenance needs promptly.

This new capability enhances our commitment to client-centric solutions that save time and resources. You can read more about the upgrade here.

In January 2025, we successfully completed a time-sensitive repair project for Svitzer’s tug, ‘Bunbury.’ The vessel was in need of maintenance and, due to a tight window between contracts, unable to commit to prolonged docking.

We completed the project in 36 days – six days ahead of the expected duration and a record turnaround time for SSM. To do so, we utilised our aforementioned double-docking capacity and created a 24/7 work schedule staffed with expert personnel.

The swift execution of the works ensured that Svitzer Bunbury was ready for its imminent contract without any setbacks.
